In our hurried lives, the last person we take the time to take care of and focus on is ourselves. Self care is critical to our well-being and mental health, and when we don't take time out for ourselves, we are not living our best lives, and we end up falling short in caring for others too. Self care doesn't have to mean an expensive spa day or a big investment, it doesn't have to cost anything at all! Here are five suggestions to treat yourself for free - for Valentine’s Day or any day.

1.) Get outside and take pictures of things that make you happy, that remind you of the beauty that surrounds you every day. It could be as minor as a spider weaving a web, unique shadows on the sidewalk, a small child playing, or even the mailman.

2.) Go for a long walk, jog, or bike ride and get some exercise. Take your dog if you have one. Pets are great icebreakers to help you meet and talk to neighbors or that person you’ve been wanting to meet.

3.) Call friends and/or family you haven’t talked to in awhile and reconnect, let them know you care and in return, feel the love.

4.) Read a book. If you don’t have a book, go to the library and get a card. You can get audio books to listen to in the car, digital books to read on your tablet or phone, or good old fashioned hardcovers.

5.) Finally, here’s a critical one, be creative, spend time with yourself, and relax without your phone. Make or listen to music, draw, sew, cook, put a puzzle together, do a crossword, take a bath. Go to your happy place and just take the time to do what you love without interferences. Hang a Do Not Disturb sign on the door!

Taking time out to re-charge and put yourself first is not at all selfish, it's crucial for your health. Remind yourself that life is worth living and enjoying, life is a marathon and not a sprint - you don’t need to run to the finish line, you can hop and skip and cartwheel there if you want to. Enjoy the journey and you’ll find that you don’t get as frustrated or angry at yourself and others.

Happy Valentine’s Day to You!
